Certificate i, ii, iii and iv
Certificates i, ii, iii & iv are the first four levels of the post secondary qualification in Australia and are intended to prepare individuals for both employment and further education and training. There is no firm duration for these qualifications and their structure and contents are guided by the Australian Qualifications Framework.
These courses are usually delivered by registered training organisations like TAFE institutes, VET centers and community education centres.
Certificates I and II
Certificates i & ii provide basic vocational skills and knowledge and prepare prepare for entry-level positions or apprenticeships in a variety of industries. Certificate ii usually is coupled with an on the job training. More than providing basic knowledge, these demonstrate to a potential employer that the individual is actively interested in their industry.
Certificate I
- Purpose: Provides basic functional knowledge and skills for work, learning, and community involvement.
- Entry Requirements: Generally, no prior knowledge or education is required.
- Outcome: Prepares individuals for entry into the workforce or further education.
Certificate II
- Purpose: Builds on the skills and knowledge gained in Certificate I, preparing individuals for entry-level positions or apprenticeships.
- Entry Requirements: Completion of Certificate I or equivalent experience.
- Outcome: Demonstrates to potential employers that you have a basic understanding and interest in a specific industry.
Certificates III and IV
Certificates iii & iv develop skills, theoretical knowledge and problem solving abilities providing training in more advanced skills and knowledge.
A Certificate IV is the equivalent of six to 12 months of studying for a degree at university and some universities allow credit transfers or course exemptions for students that have successfully completed a certificate iv.
Certificate III
- Purpose: Provides a higher level of practical skills and knowledge for specific industries, preparing individuals for skilled work.
- Entry Requirements: Completion of Certificate II or equivalent experience.
- Outcome: Prepares individuals for roles such as tradespeople, technicians, and other skilled positions.
Certificate IV
- Purpose: Offers advanced skills and knowledge, often including supervisory or management training, for specific industries.
- Entry Requirements: Completion of Certificate III or equivalent experience.
- Outcome: Prepares individuals for roles such as supervisors, team leaders, and other advanced positions.
In most cases it’s not always necessary to complete a lower level certificate to gain entry to a higher one. A lot of students directly undertake a certificate iv course.
