Melbourne: City Overview

Melbourne is located in the south-eastern part of Australia and is the capital city of the state of Victoria. It has a population of around 4.3 Million making it the second most populous city in Australia after Sydney. The City is full of vibrant energy and offers many tourist attractions including the best of restaurants, fashion boutiques, cafe-filled laneways, cool bars, unbeatable galleries, spacious parks and beautiful suburbs, each with its own special character.

Melbourne is a multicultural society and is home to residents from 180 countries. The city has the second largest Asian population in Australia, which includes the largest Indian and Sri Lankan communities in the country.

Melbourne rates highly in education, entertainment, health care, research and development, tourism and sport, and has been the world’s most livable city for the fifth year in a row in 2015, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Getting Around

Melbourne’s public transport system is reliable and easy to navigate. A network of Trams, buses and trains operate throughout the city and its suburbs. It’s also bike friendly, with a public hire bike service making it even easier to get around. Visitors to the city can even hire a car to get around in Melbourne.

Weather

Melbourne has a reputation for its changeable weather, often referred to as having ‘four seasons in one day’. Generally the city enjoys a temperate climate with warm to hot summers (December, January and February); mild, temperate springs (September, October and November) and autumns (March, April and May); and cool winters (June, July and August). Temperatures average around 25°C in summer and 14°C in winter. Rainfall is highest from May to October.
